Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS)
The Foundation of Vedic Astrology · Authored by Maharishi Parashara
The Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS) is the most comprehensive and authoritative scripture of Vedic astrology. Authored by Maharishi Parashara (father of Sage Veda Vyasa), it contains 97–100 chapters covering every aspect of natal astrology — from the creation of the cosmos to detailed prediction techniques. Every other system of Vedic astrology, including BSP and BNN, is built upon the foundation that BPHS establishes.
📖 Key Fact: BPHS defines the Parashari system — the mainstream framework of Vedic astrology used worldwide. It introduced the Ascendant (Lagna) as the most important reference point, the Vimshottari Dasha system, Divisional Charts, and the concept of Yogas.
Structure of BPHS
- Chapters 1–10: Creation of Universe, Nature of Planets, Signs and Houses
- Chapters 11–30: Planetary strengths (Shadbalas), Ashtakavarga, House significance
- Chapters 31–60: Planetary combinations (Yogas) and their effects
- Chapters 61–80: Vimshottari and other Dasha systems for timing events
- Chapters 81–97: Divisional charts (D1–D60), Remedial measures
The 9 Planets (Navagrahas)
BPHS defines 9 celestial bodies called Grahas (those that seize/influence). Each rules specific life areas, has a natural friend/enemy, and owns two zodiac signs.

Key Yogas (Planetary Combinations)
Yogas are specific planetary combinations that BPHS defines as producing distinct life results. Over 300 yogas are listed in BPHS. Here are the most important ones:
🌟 Wealth & Fortune Yogas
Dhana Yoga: Lords of 1st, 2nd, 5th, 9th, or 11th houses conjunct or mutually aspect each other. Produces wealth and financial prosperity.
Lakshmi Yoga: Lord of 9th house strong in own/exaltation sign + Lord of Lagna powerful. Exceptional wealth and grace.
Gaja Kesari Yoga: Jupiter in Kendra (1,4,7,10) from Moon. Fame, intelligence, charitable nature, prosperous life.
👑 Raj Yogas (Power & Status)
Classic Raj Yoga: Lord of a Kendra (1,4,7,10) conjunct or aspects lord of a Trikona (1,5,9). Gives authority, status, leadership.
Parivartana Yoga: Two planets exchange signs (each in the other's sign). Very powerful — activates both houses completely.
Viparita Raj Yoga: Lords of 6th, 8th, or 12th in each other's houses. Rises from adversity, gains through others' downfall.
⚠️ Challenging Yogas
Kemadruma Yoga: Moon with no planets in adjacent houses (2nd and 12th from Moon). Mental instability, hardships.
Mangal Dosha: Mars in 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house. Creates friction in marriage. Cancelled by various conditions.
Shrapit Yoga: Saturn and Rahu conjunct. Indicates past-life karma causing delays and obstacles.
💡 Remember: A single yoga rarely operates in isolation. Strong yogas need the Dasha (period) of the participating planets to deliver full results.
Vimshottari Dasha System
The Vimshottari Dasha is BPHS's primary timing system. It divides life into planetary periods totalling 120 years, determined by the Moon's Nakshatra at birth. This tells you WHEN a planet's influences will manifest.
🌙
Moon (Chandra)
10 years
🟡
Jupiter (Guru)
16 years
⚪
Venus (Shukra)
20 years
⚫
Saturn (Shani)
19 years
💚
Mercury (Budha)
17 years
How to Find Your Current Dasha
- Find the Moon's Nakshatra in your birth chart (use the Planets table)
- Each Nakshatra has a ruling planet — that planet's Dasha starts at birth
- Calculate elapsed portion based on Moon's position within the Nakshatra
- Successive Dashas follow the sequence: Sun→Moon→Mars→Rahu→Jupiter→Saturn→Mercury→Ketu→Venus
- Within each Mahadasha, 9 Antardashas (sub-periods) operate in the same sequence
Reading Dasha Results: A planet gives results of (a) its own nature, (b) the houses it owns, (c) the house it occupies, (d) planets it conjuncts or aspects. The Antardasha planet modifies the Mahadasha results significantly.
How to Read a Birth Chart (BPHS Method)
- Identify the Lagna (Ascendant) — This is your 1st house. Count remaining houses counter-clockwise in North Indian style or clockwise in South Indian style.
- Note the Lagna Lord — Where is the ruler of the 1st house placed? Its house placement, strength, and aspects shape the entire chart reading.
- Assess planetary strength (Shadbala) — Is each planet exalted, in own sign, friend's sign, or debilitated? Exalted/own sign = strong; debilitated = weak results.
- Identify house lords and their positions — Lord of 7th in 4th means marriage connects to home/mother. Lord of 10th in 1st gives self-made career.
- Check for Yogas — Look for Raj Yogas, Dhana Yogas, or challenging combinations.
- Apply the Dasha — Check the current Mahadasha and Antardasha to time when planetary results will manifest.
- Verify with transits — Current positions of slow planets (Saturn, Jupiter, Rahu/Ketu) over natal planets trigger events.

Bhrigu Saral Paddhati (BSP)
Bhrigu's Easy Methodology · Age-Based Prediction System
Bhrigu Saral Paddhati (BSP) — meaning "Bhrigu's Easy Methodology" — is a powerful predictive system based on the teachings of Sage Bhrigu. It was researched and compiled by modern astrologers (notably through Saptarishis Astrology magazine) and operates on a remarkable principle: each year of a person's life corresponds to one house in the birth chart, cycling every 12 years.
🔬 Research Background: BSP was developed through extensive blind chart testing on hundreds of horoscopes by researchers in the Saptarishis Astrology tradition. Its rules have shown stunning accuracy in predicting specific life events with age precision.
BSP Core Principle: The 12-Year Life Cycle
The Fundamental Rule: Take the native's age. Divide by 12. The remainder = the house that governs that year of life.
Age 1 → House 1 · Age 2 → House 2 · Age 3 → House 3 ... Age 12 → House 12
Age 13 → House 1 · Age 14 → House 2 ... (the cycle repeats every 12 years)
Examples of the Cycle
- Native is 25 years old: 25 ÷ 12 = 2 remainder 1 → 1st house governs this year (self, new beginnings, health)
- Native is 30 years old: 30 ÷ 12 = 2 remainder 6 → 6th house governs (enemies, disease, service)
- Native is 36 years old: 36 ÷ 12 = 3 remainder 0 → 12th house (since remainder 0 = 12th house)
💡 How to interpret: Find what house corresponds to the native's age. Then examine: (a) which planets are in that house, (b) what sign rules that house, (c) what the house lord is doing. BSP then applies its specific rules about Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Rahu, Ketu based on their natal placements to refine the prediction.
BSP Rules (Compiled Research Rules 1–15)
Saturn Rules
BSP Rule 1 — Saturn's Karmic House: Wherever Saturn sits, he creates ups and downs in the 4th house from itself — affecting at least one signification of that house. This is called Saturn's "Previous Lives House" (karma to be resolved). Saturn first creates up, then down (or vice versa) in that house's matters throughout life.
BSP Rule 3 — Saturn as Judge: The house where Saturn sits becomes the house where unfinished karma must be completed. The 3rd house from Saturn shows where Saturn delivers its most decisive results — the native must deal with that house's matters intensely.
BSP Rule — Saturn's Age Trigger: Saturn's full transit return (29–30 years) marks a major karmic point. At age 30 and 60, Saturn-related themes from the natal chart manifest powerfully.
Jupiter Rules
BSP Rule 2 — Jupiter's Karmic House: Wherever Jupiter sits, he creates ups and downs in the 10th and 6th house from itself — fluctuations in at least one signification. He first builds up, then destroys one signification of that house (Jupiter's "Previous Lives Houses").
BSP Rule 4 — Jupiter's 5th Aspect at Age 16: Jupiter implements its 5th aspect (the 5th house from Jupiter) in the 16th year of the native's life. This brings results of the 5th house from Jupiter — education, romance, creativity at that age.
BSP Rule 11 — Jupiter's 5th Aspect at Age 32: Jupiter again implements its 5th aspect in the 32nd year. This "unlocking" characteristic brings Purva Punya (previous life merit) results — often a major breakthrough in career, spirituality, or wisdom.
Mars Rules
BSP Rule 6 — Mars in the 36th Year: Mars implements itself in the 7th house from its natal position in the 36th year. This brings marital events, partnerships, or open conflicts related to Mars's nature (accidents, surgeries, disputes).
BSP Rule 7 — Mars's 8th House: Mars sitting anywhere creates significant events in the 8th house from itself — related to inheritance, accidents, sudden events, occult. At transit Mars returns to its natal sign every ~2 years, triggering events.
Rahu & Ketu Rules
BSP Rule 8 — Ketu at Age 24: Ketu implements itself in the 12th house from its natal position in the 24th year of life. This brings foreign travel, isolation, spiritual experiences, or losses related to 12th house matters.
BSP Rule 9 — Jupiter's 9th Aspect: Jupiter's 9th aspect (9th house from Jupiter) activates in the 28th year — bringing father, dharma, luck, and long journeys into sharp focus.
BSP Rule 10 — Rahu in the 48th Year: Rahu implements its 7th aspect (opposite house) in the 48th year. This is often a major life transformation involving foreign elements, obsessions, or worldly desires culminating.
Combined Planet Rules
BSP Rule 5 — Jupiter + Saturn Conjunction: When Jupiter and Saturn conjunct in any house, at least one signification of Aries sign's house (wherever Aries falls in the chart) is affected. The conjunction's house and Aries house both become active simultaneously.
BSP Rule 12 — Saturn 3rd from Itself: The 3rd house from Saturn shows where Saturn delivers its sharpest, most precise results — this is Saturn's "action zone" where you must work hard or face consequences.
BSP Rule 13 — Rahu's Obsession House: Wherever Rahu sits, the native becomes obsessed with the significations of that house. The 12th from Rahu shows what is sacrificed or lost due to this obsession.
BSP Age-Based Prediction Timeline
A key BSP innovation is predicting events at specific ages based on planetary natural transits and aspect activations:
| Age | Planet & Event | What to Look For |
| 12 | Saturn completes 1st 12-year cycle | Major shift in life theme, education changes |
| 16 | Jupiter activates 5th from itself | Education, romance, creativity peak |
| 22–23 | Saturn returns to natal point (½ cycle) + Rahu axis shift | Career/identity confusion, major decisions |
| 24 | Ketu implements 12th from itself | Foreign travel, isolation, spiritual calling |
| 28 | Jupiter activates 9th aspect | Luck, father, dharma, philosophy emerge |
| 29–30 | Saturn's 1st return to natal position | Major karmic reckoning, life restructuring |
| 32 | Jupiter's 5th aspect again (Purva Punya) | Major breakthrough, past life merit delivers |
| 36 | Mars implements 7th house from itself | Marriage events, partnerships, conflicts |
| 42–43 | Saturn opposes natal Saturn (2nd return mid-point) | Mid-life re-evaluation, health, career shifts |
| 48 | Rahu activates 7th from itself | Major transformation, foreign/obsessive themes peak |
| 58–60 | Saturn 2nd return + Jupiter completes 5 cycles | Second karmic reckoning, legacy, retirement |
How to Apply BSP in Practice
- Draw the D1 (Rashi) chart — BSP primarily uses the natal Rashi chart only
- Calculate the year-house: Age ÷ 12 → remainder = active house
- Examine that house: Planets in it, sign ruling it, aspects on it, house lord's position
- Apply Saturn's rule: Find the 4th from Saturn — note if the age-house aligns with it
- Apply Jupiter's rule: Find the 5th and 10th from Jupiter — check alignment
- Check age-specific rules: Is the native at 16, 24, 28, 30, 32, 36, 48? Apply the specific planet rule
- Confirm with transit: Check where Saturn and Jupiter currently transit — do they aspect the active house?
- State the prediction: Combine the house's natural significations + planets involved + the BSP rule triggered
⚠️ Important: BSP works on karma — it shows what is highly likely based on unresolved life themes. It should be used alongside BPHS basics (Dasha, Lagna strength) for complete readings. Never use single rules in isolation.

Bhrigu Nandi Nadi (BNN)
Prediction Without Dashas · Transit-Natal Combination System
Bhrigu Nandi Nadi (BNN) is a revolutionary predictive system that combines the wisdom of Sage Bhrigu with the Nadi tradition of South India (decoded by legendary astrologer Prof. R.G. Rao). Its most remarkable feature: accurate predictions WITHOUT using the Dasha system. Instead, it reads the birth chart as a narrative — planets tell a story through their natural significations, house placements, and transit activations.
🎯 What makes BNN unique: No Ascendant required. No house lords. No divisional charts. Just the Rashi chart + current transit. Planets are "actors" and Rashis are "stages" — when the right planets meet in transit, life events unfold. BNN can identify the same event in minutes that traditional methods take hours to find.
Planetary Karakas (Natural Significators) in BNN
In BNN, each planet is an actor (karaka) with fixed roles it plays throughout life. The Rashi (sign) it sits in is its "stage." Understanding karakas is the foundation of BNN prediction.
| Planet | Primary Karakas (What it represents) | Strength in Sign |
| ☀️ Sun | Father, Government, Authority, Soul, Health, King/Boss | Strong in Aries, Leo, Sagittarius |
| 🌙 Moon | Mother, Mind, Public, Water, Milk, Female energy | Strong in Cancer, Taurus, Pisces |
| 🔴 Mars | Brothers, Property, Blood, Surgery, Police/Military, Energy | Strong in Aries, Scorpio, Capricorn |
| 💚 Mercury | Intelligence, Business, Communication, Skill, Accountants, Youth | Strong in Gemini, Virgo, Aquarius |
| 🟡 Jupiter | Husband (for women), Guru, Children, Wisdom, Finance, Bank | Strong in Sagittarius, Pisces, Cancer |
| ⚪ Venus | Wife (for men), Luxury, Vehicles, Arts, Relationships, Jewellery | Strong in Taurus, Libra, Pisces |
| ⚫ Saturn | Servants, Delay, Discipline, Karma, Agriculture, Old age, Death | Strong in Capricorn, Aquarius, Libra |
| 🐉 Rahu | Foreign, Deception, Technology, Drugs, Ancestors, Unusual events | Strong in Gemini, Virgo, Aquarius |
| 🔥 Ketu | Spirituality, Liberation, Past life, Surgery, Isolation, Research | Strong in Sagittarius, Scorpio, Pisces |
💡 BNN Key Rule: For predicting events relating to a male native → use Jupiter as the primary karaka for self and relationships. For a female native → use Venus. For questions about father → Sun. For mother → Moon. Always start from the karaka planet, not the Ascendant.
The 6 Core Rules of BNN Prediction
Rule 1 — The Trine Axis (1-5-9 Connection): Planets in the 1st, 5th, or 9th house from a karaka planet are its strongest allies. If the event planet (e.g. Venus for marriage) is in a trine from Jupiter, the event is confirmed and positive. Think of it as: Planets in a triangle talk to each other constantly.
Rule 2 — The 2-3-7-11-12 Connection: Planets that are 2nd, 3rd, 7th, 11th, or 12th from a karaka also have significant connections — they bring resources (2nd), effort (3rd), partnership (7th), gains (11th), or expenditure (12th) to the event. This defines the nature of how an event unfolds.
Rule 3 — Retrograde Planet Rule: A retrograde planet aspects the house behind it (12th from itself) in addition to its normal aspects. This means a retrograde planet's influence extends backward — it brings unfinished karmas from the past into the present situation.
Rule 4 — Planetary Strength by Sign: A planet's ability to deliver its karakatwas depends on the strength of the Rashi it occupies. A planet in its own sign, exaltation, or friendly sign delivers full results. In enemy or debilitated sign, results are compromised or delayed.
Rule 5 — Transit Activation: Natal combinations do not fire until current transit planets aspect or conjunct them. When the transiting version of the same planet returns to or aspects its natal combination, the event triggers. This is how BNN times events precisely without Dasha.
Rule 6 — Life-Changing Planetary Combinations (must be prioritised): Certain natal conjunctions override all else and change the entire life narrative. These include:
- Saturn + Mars: Anxiety, loss of position, suspension, accidents (when transit triggers)
- Saturn + Ketu: Break/termination in service, depression, spiritual crisis
- Saturn + Jupiter: Breakthrough in career/profession — these two together create sustained success
- Saturn + Rahu: Foreign travel, deception from others, unusual career path
- Jupiter + Venus: Wealth accumulation, marriage, luxuries — very auspicious combination
- Jupiter + Moon: Emotional intelligence, public fame, nurturing leadership
- Mars + Ketu: Surgery, accidents, spiritual warrior energy
Key BNN Prediction Combinations by Life Event
💑 Marriage Prediction
For a Male: Use Jupiter as significator. Check what planets are in trine (1-5-9) from Jupiter. Venus must connect to Jupiter (directly or through sign) for marriage to occur. When transit Jupiter or Venus aspects this natal combination → marriage triggers.
For a Female: Use Venus as significator. Check what planets connect to Venus. Saturn connecting to Venus can delay but not deny marriage. When transit Venus or Jupiter aspects the natal Venus + its connections → marriage timing.
💼 Career & Profession
Career indicator: Saturn (discipline + karma) connecting with Jupiter (expansion) in natal chart gives sustained professional growth. Sun connecting to Saturn = government/authority career. Mercury + Saturn = accountant/business. Mars + Saturn = engineering/police/military.
🏠 Property & Home
Property: Venus (comforts) + Saturn (real estate) conjunction or trine = buying/owning property. When transit Saturn or Venus aspects this combination, property is bought or sold. Example: Venus in Cancer + Saturn in Scorpio (both water signs, trine) = buying an old home.
👶 Children
Children: Jupiter (children) connecting to Moon (birth) or 5th house planets. When transit Jupiter completes its return to the natal position (every 12 years) → childbirth events often trigger if the combination exists.
✈️ Foreign Travel
Foreign: Rahu (foreign) connecting to Saturn (journey/displacement) or in 12th house relationship with key karaka. When transit Rahu or Saturn activates the natal Rahu combinations → foreign travel or residence.
How to Apply BNN in Practice
- Set up the D1 chart — Only the Rashi chart is needed. No Lagna significance.
- Choose the primary karaka — Based on what you want to predict and the native's gender (Jupiter for males, Venus for females as self karaka)
- Find planets in trine from the karaka (1-5-9) — These are automatic allies and confirmers
- Identify life-changing combinations — Check for Saturn+Mars, Jupiter+Venus, Jupiter+Saturn etc. (Rule 6)
- Check planet strengths — Are the relevant planets in strong or weak signs?
- Check retrograde planets — Do they extend influence backward to the 12th from themselves?
- Overlay the current transit chart — Where are Jupiter and Saturn transiting? Do they aspect the natal combination?
- Confirm the event — If transit planet aspects the natal combination AND the karaka connects to event planet → event fires now
🎯 BNN Prediction Example: Male native has Jupiter in Cancer (own sign/exaltation — very strong). Venus is in Scorpio (5th from Jupiter = trine). This confirms marriage potential. Currently Saturn transits Cancer (conjoins natal Jupiter) AND transit Venus enters Scorpio (joins natal Venus) → Marriage triggers now. No Dasha calculation needed.
System Comparison: BPHS vs BSP vs BNN
📜 BPHS (Parashari)
Best for: Complete life analysis
Uses: Lagna, House lords, Yogas, Dasha, Divisional charts
Timing: Vimshottari Dasha + transit
Complexity: High — requires deep study
Accuracy: Very high with all layers
Limitation: Complex, time-intensive
⚡ BSP (Bhrigu Saral)
Best for: Age-specific predictions
Uses: D1 chart, Age calculation, Karmic houses
Timing: Age-based (12-year cycles)
Complexity: Medium — rules are clear
Accuracy: Stunning for specific ages
Limitation: Works best for karmic events
🌊 BNN (Bhrigu Nandi)
Best for: Event timing without Dasha
Uses: D1 chart only + transit
Timing: Transit activation of natal combos
Complexity: Low — fast to apply
Accuracy: Very high for specific events
Limitation: Needs strong transit knowledge
💡 Professional Recommendation: Use all three systems together. BPHS gives the framework and potential. BSP confirms at what age. BNN confirms exactly when in transit. Triple confirmation = highest confidence prediction.
Complete Chart Reading Workflow
- Generate the D1 chart using the native's birth details. Note Lagna, planets in each house, and Moon's Nakshatra.
- BPHS Layer: Identify Lagna lord, note exalted/debilitated planets, spot any major Yogas, calculate current Vimshottari Dasha period.
- BSP Layer: Calculate age-house (Age ÷ 12, take remainder). Apply Saturn's 4th house rule, Jupiter's 5th/10th rule, and any age-specific rules (BSP Rules 1–15).
- BNN Layer: Choose primary karaka. Find trine connections. Identify life-changing combinations. Check transit chart for activation.
- Synthesise: Where all three systems agree → highest confidence prediction. State the event, its nature, and approximate timing.
- Suggest remedies (BPHS): Planetary gemstones, mantras, charity days aligned to the challenging planets.
Remember: Astrology shows tendencies and karmic patterns, not absolute fate. Free will, effort, and remedies can always modify the intensity of planetary influences. The purpose of reading a chart is to empower the native with self-knowledge — not to frighten them with predictions.
